Climatologists study the climate – weather conditions over a period of time – focusing on how and why the climate changes, its variability, and the effects of climate on the biosphere. Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get.
As a climatologist, your work could include:
- Using satellites to study climate trends, comparing current and historic cloud cover, snow pack and glacier sizes;
- Studying ocean temperatures, ocean currents, changes in salinity and volcanic eruptions;
- Creating climate models to demonstrate past climate events and forecasting future events.
Your work would help us to understand how and why our climate is changing, indicating how seemingly minor changes, like a rise in temperature, can impact our future on Earth. You’ll be in a unique position to make a positive impact on the environment by working with industry to mitigate their effect on the environment or explain the impacts of climate so that society can plan its activities, design its buildings and infrastructure, and anticipate the effects of adverse conditions.
